Sermon Outline

  • Sermon Scripture - John 10:11-21
Intro
  • Roughly 4,200 religions in the world
  • What sets Christianity apart?
    • Our faith is based on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
    • Christianity is based on relationship (between God and man and is mediated through Jesus).
    • Jesus is the only leader/savior in a religious movement that was physically/bodily resurrected.
The Shepherd Lays Down His Life
  • Jesus has never shied away from making bold and even controversial statements
    • John 10:11
    • Jesus blows away all expectations of what the savior would do
  • One of the main jobs of a shepherd is actually to protect the sheep.
    • 1 Samuel 17:34-37

They belonged to me only by virtue of the fact that I paid for them. It was money earned by blood, sweat and tears. I was buying them literally with my own body which had been laid down with this day in mind. Because of this I felt in a special was that they were in very truth a part of me and I a part of them. This made them exceedingly precious to me. - Philip Keller, shepherd

  • How does Jesus view us (his sheep)?
    • Deuteronomy 7:6
  • This is why Jesus was willing to come to lay down his life for the sheep. It wasn't a backup plan
    • Acts 2:23
    • Jesus coming to die should not have been a shock (Isaiah 53, Psalm 22)
The Shepherd Gathers the Sheep

    • Only Jesus can rebuild the relationship that is broken because of sin and Jesus pays the debt
    • Romans 6:23
  • Why did Christ die?
    • To pay the debt we owed in order to bring us back into relationship with God
  • Why are we are his sheep
    • Sheep are 100% dependent on the shepherd
    • Without the Good Shepherd (Jesus), we remain dead in our sin
  • John 10:16
    • Jesus is the shepherd of ALL the sheep
    • Jesus will save all that the Father has given to Him
The Shepherd Saves
  • John 10:17-18 give the real hope of this life.
    • Highlights Jesus' divinity - He IS God because He as power over death
    • Jesus having power over death is essential for our salvation
  • What Christ accomplishes in His life, death, and resurrection
    • His life fulfilled the demands of the Law and completes the perfect life we never could.
    • His death paid the debt for our sins which we no longer owe.
    • His resurrection assures all of us of victory over death.
  • In the resurrection Jesus officially declares that Satan, sin and death have no claim on the believer that is resting in Christ!

No guilt in life, no fear in death—
This is the pow’r of Christ in me;
From life’s first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No pow’r of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home—
Here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand.” -
In Christ Alone, Keith Getty & Stuart Townsend
